Pyometra
Pyometra is an infection of the uterus in dogs and cats. It is relatively common, affecting approximately 50% of un-spayed female dogs and cats. It is a serious condition which results in a variety of clinical and pathological signs requiring emergency surgery to remove the infected uterus. Non surgical medical treatment is typically ineffective, can be dangerous, and pyometra can reoccur.
Diseases of the
Non-neutered males
Diseases associated with excessive hormone levels (BPH, squamous metaplasia, and cystic hyperplasia) are typically treated by neutering the dog, Because testosterone and estrogen are both formed in the testicles, neutering is generally an effective treatment.
Other Diseases:

Kidney disease (tumors, stones, infection)
Bladder disease (stones, infection, tumors)
Prostatic disease (tumors, cysts, infection)
Prevention
Pyometras and mammary cancer can be prevented by early spaying.
Dogs spayed before their first heat cycle have a 0.05% risk of developing mammary tumors, while the risk jumps to 8% for dogs spayed after the first, but before the second, heat cycle, versus a 25% risk for dogs spayed after the second heart cycle.
